Jamaica in the Square returns to the City Centre for a second installment, following its success in 2012, which saw approximately 300k visitors coming to the city for the event. This year to mark the 55th anniversary of Jamaican Independence, the Association of Jamaican Nationals (AJN) are hosting another free open-air Jamaica street festival outside the Birmingham city’s Council House. The festival will occupy Victoria Square and upper Newhall street and will take place from the 4th – 6th August 2017. Jamaica In the Square (JITS) will celebrate the best of Jamaican diaspora culture, though many people would have heard of Jamaica through its music exports and seen the rise of Jamaican sports through the popularity of Usain Bolt and other athletes, there is nothing like experiencing true authenticity of Jamaican culture, food and fashion. The festival will encapsulate the true spirit of Jamaica. This will be accomplished by the inclusion of cultural activities, entertainment, food, arts and audience participation. There will also be an abundance of tourist information available, to inform the public about the island and its traditions.

The event is anticipated to attract people from all sectors of the community over the 3-day period. Attendance will be achieved through traditional methods of marketing, highlighting food, dance, music and fashion as key elements. The event will bring a strong sense of togetherness and cultural education to Birmingham. The Association of Jamaican Nationals (AJN) together with Birmingham City Council will be working closely with the community to ensure the event engages with everyone that lives, works and plays in the city. The AJN want the event to be a visual demonstration of the strong links that have been established between Birmingham and Jamaica and to demonstrate the synergy that exists through its motto “Out Of Many One People”, which is the core makeup of Birmingham as it is one of the most Diverse cities in Europe. Jamaica In the Square will officially be opened by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham and the Jamaican High Commissioner on Friday 4th December 2.30pm in Victoria Square.
